What is an Active Medium?
This describes the type of element/crystal used. The active medium can be a solid, liquid, or gas. When activated, each active medium will generate a laser beam to do its job in treatment. What is Wavelength?
Most lasers used in dentistry operate in the near-infrared and visible regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Different lasers emit energy at different wavelengths and sometimes the same laser that uses different methods of delivering the laser energy to the target site can give a different therapeutic result. The majority of lasers used in dentistry fall in the infrared section. The Millenium Perio-Lase MVP-7 laser, which specializes in treating gum disease, has a 1098nm wavelength and is specialized in treating infected tissue.
What is Laser Tissue Interaction?
Since each laser has a different wavelength due to the different type of elements and crystals used, each wavelength will have a specialized interaction on certain types of tissue, such as type of skin, gum, bone, and teeth. The different types of interactions that lasers can do are photothermal (light-heat), photoacoustic (light-vibration), photochemical (light-chemical changes to tissue), photodynamic, and biostimulation. Some lasers can do one or more of these things. What are Specialized Dental Lasers?
Since there are so many different type of wavelength lasers, many of them do not do the same things. Certain lasers are specialized for certain uses and are not as efficient when used for other types of treatment. For example, a hard tissue laser, such as one that is used to cut teeth or remove calcifications, will be efficient for those things, but be inefficient for cutting soft tissue non calcified tissue. It is important for the consumer who wants laser gum therapy to know that the laser being used will be the type that specializes in the treatment they need. What is Specificity?
Some lasers are very specialized and specific for what it can remove or treat while other lasers will be non specific and remove anything. Under certain types of energies, lasers will vaporize or burn hard and soft tissue, weld tissue together, and/or coagulate or cause hemostasis to blood (to stop bleeding). Under recommended energies and pulsations, certain lasers will be very specific to certain tissues, while other lasers do not have many specific settings and will do the same thing at a different speed. The Millenium Perio-Lase MVP-7 is specifically specialized to remove infected gum tissue while leaving the healing and healthy tissue intact. Other lasers remove a lot more and prevent new attachment or regeneration. What is Penetration Depth?
Scattering and absorption of laser light occur to some degree in all types of biological tissue. Together, they attenuate the laser beam and determine the depth to which the beam can induce a significant biological effect. When used properly, certain lasers can penetrate its energy through tissue without vaporizing it. For example, by penetrating through tissue, the laser can be effective in killing certain bacteria causing disease. The Millenium Perio-Lase MVP-7 can penetrate 4-15mm deep and through gum tissue, which is the typical depth of bacterial penetration inside the gums and deep into the gum pockets. Other lasers cannot penetrate nearly as much before they vaporize the healthy gum tissue.×
